"Akbar, change Sita's name; Don't do this to the park lions again” - Calcutta High Court
The Calcutta High Court has ordered that the names of the lions brought to the Siliguri Safari Zoo in West Bengal should be changed.
It is common practice to bring animals from other state zoos and breed them in other zoos. Through this, the breeding program for wild animals is being made successful. In that respect, the state of Tripura has a zoo called Sepajila.
2 lions were transported from this park to Siliguri Safari Zoo in West Bengal on February 12. A 7-year-old male lion is named 'Akbar'. Another 6-year-old female lion has been named 'Sita'.

Currently, a petition has been filed in the Kolkata court on behalf of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, stating that keeping these two lions in one place is insulting to Hinduism. Both the names given to the lions were given in the old park itself. The forest department also said that they were not renamed after coming to the West Bengal park. This case was filed after that.
In the petition filed by Vishwa Hindu Parishad, 'The state forest department has given names to the lions. Adding 'Sita' to the name 'Akbar' in it is considered disrespectful to Hindus. Therefore, the name of the lion should be changed', it said.
The case came up for hearing today. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the West Bengal government and park management to change the names of Sita and Akbar lions , and has instructed them not to name the animals after Hindu, Christian, Muslim religious fighters and respectable people .
